Teaching & Learning
At Saxon Wood, we believe that every child is entitled to a rich, balanced and relevant curriculum suitable for their needs as an individual. The Saxon Wood Curriculum brings together the fundamental learning priorities of individuals and groups of children within the statutory entitlement of the EYFS Framework, The Engagement Model or the National Curriculum but is adapted and designed to meet the needs of the “whole child‟.
A personalised, differentiated and purposeful broad and balanced curriculum is at the heart of the teaching and learning at our School. We believe the child or young person has to be the starting point of any educational programme. The statutory National Curriculum subjects are carefully balanced with our additional learning prerequisites to meet the needs of our pupils.
Curriculum Intent
To offer a broad, balanced and coherent curriculum, designed to meet the individual needs of all learners. The curriculum is challenging and appropriate, whilst being creative and stimulating. We contribute to the learners cultural capital through enriching the curriculum. Our ethos is:
"Where learning has no limits"
Curriculum Implementation
Learners at Saxon Wood will access our bespoke curriculum through 1 of 4 learning pathways depending on their individual needs. Our learning pathways include:
- EYFS Pathway
- Sensory Pathway
- Enquiry Pathway
- Discovery Pathway
The learning pathways are designed to engage each learner in a way that suits them best and allows them opportunity to make progress from their starting points in all areas of their learning.
Curriculum Impact
We know that our learners are diverse and learning is personalised to the individual, recognising that they learn at a different pace to each other. Staff are constantly monitoring progress and respond to the individual needs of the learner through the use of summative and formative assessment tools. This in turn informs subsequent learning outcomes. Robust monitoring, scrutiny and moderation is undertaken on a termly basis and data is also used to inform any required intervention.
Impact is also measured through a child's personal development. Personal Development is the celebration of learners' strengths and talents, identifying areas for personal growth, the development of safe, trusting relationships, the acquisition of relevant life skills, independence, behaviour for learning skills and the development of wellbeing, resilience and promotion of student voice. Learners and their families are involved in celebrating their learning through; EHCP meetings, PDP inputs, annual reports, celebration assemblies, certificates and parents evenings.
